Another graphic assignment

Warning Short blog

You know I am starting to think that short blogs have been coming up more because the holidays are coming up and it's just mostly relax time. Today in ICS, we just talked about the bouncing ball assignment Mr.Arkin asked us to work on yesterday. A lot of people were unable to accomplish creating the program so he gave us some more time to both complete and perfect them. I was able to actually make my program very nice. I am happy! Near the end of the class, Mr.Arkin showed us a new program where a rectangle (I think it blinks) moves around the outside of the window. There were many modifications that Mr.Arkin made that made it even cooler. Mr.Arkin again asked us to write a program for this. I am trying but not succeeding! I hope to at least try to finish half. For homework, Mr.Arkin asked us to complete the bouncing ball and if we are done to do the next program. I hope I can finish it tonight. Let's hope!

Test review

We got our tests back today and I did not do as well as I thought I would. I found that the test was fairly easy but when Mr.Arkin was taking up the test today, it was all so different than what I expected. I actually did not fail luckily but I did get a bad mark below 70. I could tell I would do bad when Mr.Arkin was taking it up.

Mr.Arkin handed us each a copy of the test and asked us to answer them and then Mr.Arkin took it up as a class. We each took turns to answer and Mr.Arkin also showed us his model answers. I was surprised to see many mistakes I made. I am hoping that everything else I have done will upgrade my mark so that it is at least a high 70%. I am going to study my butt off for the exam and work very hard for the culminating activity to boost my mark. We also learned a little about "Don't argue with parameters" and "Creating executable". It was actually really cool because now we can send it to any of our friends and let them have some fun. Mr.Arkin showed us a program today which was really cool where the user enters a character and the program repeats this character and bounces it off. I thought that it was just going to be a model of what we could do for our culminating activity but then he asked us to make the program ourselves. I was surprised! I have no idea how to do it. I am not even close! I now have an idea though so I am going to try!

For homework, we have to create the program, write on our daily blogs and get our tests signed. Wish me luck!

Test 2

Warning! Short blog entry

Today, was our second programming test! Mr.Arkin told us that it would be this week and when one of the students asked him if it was Monday, Mr.Arkin said maybe with an odd smile on his face so I already had a feeling it would be today which is why I studied extra hard last night. I found that the test was fairly easy! I did indeed make a few careless mistakes which I noticed later but I think I did pretty good. The test mostly centered around procedures and functions, which I am guessing is because we recently learned that. I was able to finish earlier than expected and got the chance to triple check my work since I had some spare time. Once we finished out tests, Mr.Arkin introduced some models for our culminating activity which were actually really cool! He gave us time until the end of the class, to just explore the ideas. I hope I do good on the test and that it will boost up my mark before exams and the culminating activity. Let's pray, guys!

Friday!!!!!!!!!!!

Whoever said money can't buy happiness simply didn't know where to go shopping.

~Bo Derek

It's Friday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whhhhhhhooooooooooohhhhhhhhooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!! SShhhhhhhooooooooopppppppppppiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can probably guess how excited I am that the weekend is coming back! If you still do not understand yet, you can check out Mahak's blog to find out how bad my obsession is. You may ask why I am excited? Well, that is a very bad question to ask if you know me well enough. I am going Christmas shopping! It has been months since I have even gone into a mall. I miss the beautiful glistening of the windows, the sound of kids crying to buy toys (my brother), the shine of the mirrors and the fun of carrying heavy shopping bags and walking down the escalator like a supermodel. I will be off tomorrow to buy all of my presents for all my friends and Secret Santa presents. I am soooooo excited!
So, there isn't much to say about today's class, because all we did was work some more on our peer tutoring. I was able to get all of my doubts cleared up! Oh no, I have 200 seconds till the weekend! Gotta go!

                                                               *                *                 *

Hey, it is Saturday! So, as I was saying I did get a lot of my doubts cleared up thanks to Grace and Mahak. I am now able to study all of my notes in preparation for our upcoming programming test next week. I hope it is not too hard but I am still going to go prepared for the fun. For homework, we were just asked to all become level 4's and to get ready for our test next week. I think it would be good to get the test over with before we left for the break.

I am actually very busy today because I have a lot of homework I would like to get done but at the same time I also have to go shopping for my Christmas presents and go to a party tonight in honour of my brother's soccer team. I am leaving for the mall at around 2:00 so that I can come back in time to finish some homework and get ready for the party tonight. Alright I gotta go now to finish the rest of my homework. Bye!!!!!!

This will be how happy I will be on Saturday when I walk into the mall!

The power of peers

A successful person isn't necessarily better than her less successful peers at solving problems; her pattern-recognition facilities have just learned what problems are worth solving. "
- Ray Kurzweil

I just came back from International night which was actually very fun because the shows were fantastic. I really enjoyed it but since I came home late, I have less time to do homework.

Now onto ICS. Wow! I am caught up much more. Today, I learned a few things that I did not know before because of the power of peers. I am hoping to learn much more in the future. It was very interesting and actually refreshing to review all of our notes as a group so that we could all understand more and become 4's.

In class today, we started our peer tutoring straight when we entered the class. All of us were ready for a lesson when MrArkin asked us why we were not tutoring one another. Our group included Grace, Mahak and I. I was a level 3 and I still am a level 3 because we have not yet gotten to the part where I need help. We revised everything we learned in programming from the beginning so that Mahak too, could understand everything since she was lost after her trip to India. We also went through all of our programs that we didn't understand and needed help with. I was able to get some help in this department though.

I am looking forward to tomorrow's period. I am continuing to look through my notes and reviewing for a possible future test. I am excited for tomorrow as well because it happens to be Friday. One of my favorite days of the week. Ya!

I will understand!

"I am so clever that sometimes I don't understand a single word of what I am saying."
- Oscar Wilde

Today, we dived deeper into the topics of functions. Most people were not able to finish all of the homework last night or even any of it because they did not understand the concept of functions. I was one of those people who did not completely understand it but did some what. I had completed my homework but they did not run successfully. Boohoo... We did a small overview of it and dug a little deeper though.

We also learned about how procedures work. As you know procedures perform a defined task while functions return a single value. We learned how this rule really does apply today in class. It is a lot like writing a function but at the same time it is very different. I hope to learn many more techniques to help me become a better programmer.

For homework, we were shown a model answer to the modified version of assignment 9 and we were asked to write what we believe is the function for one of the variables called nextConsonant. I am excited to know how it will work out. Yay!

Near, the end of the class, Mr.Arkin explained to us that we are going to form groups of three where everyone is at a different comprehension level of Computer Science. The task he asked us to do over the course of the week is to bring every one's understanding of Computer Science to the same level as everyone else. I am really excited because I am now going to get the opportunity to understand more instead of being the confused one all the time. In our group, we decided that tonight we would go through our notes and just note down what we found to be a little confusing so that we could get working for tomorrow. Wish me luck blog readers!

Most confusing lesson ever

"I'm not confused, I'm just well mixed"
- Robert Frost

I am sure that by looking at the title of my blog entry, you can guess that I am very confused my today's lesson. So many variables! So many sections! So complicated!

Today, we were asked by Mr.Arkin to write the algorithm for our substring assignment 11. The first time we did this, I did okay but I was not clear about the loops when I wrote it. Mr.Arkin asked us a second time to do it with the modified version of assignment 9 that we finished last night. I understood from writing the algorithm for assignment 11 so I was able to do this one with accuracy. Later, we learned some new ways to make our program look more like an algorithm. It was pretty cool! We learned how to use programmer defined- functions. I actually found the program as a whole to be confusing but I was able to understand how to write the functions and how they work. That part was pretty easy to understand.

For homework, we were asked to modify all of our assignments from #10-#24 (where we could) so that we include functions in our program. I still have to do so wish me all the luck1 I have a feeling I will need it. I hope to get that all done today along with my other homework because I came home pretty late so I don't have as much time to work. I hope all goes well! :-D

Back to old times!

Just living is not enough.  One must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower.
~Hans Christian Anderson

Mr.Arkin came back today! I actually missed our class lessons with Mr.Arkin.We had an early dismissal today so we were let out at 12:00. Which means that our periods were much shorter. Each period was I believe 35 minutes long. It seems pretty long but trust me when you are sitting in class, it seems like you just walked into the class.

Due to the short period of time for a lesson, Mr.Arkin started right away. We got into class and the first thing I heard was "Are you copying this down?" So, I got settled quickly and started copying down the notes on the projector. The note was on counted loops. Mr.Arkin used it in all of his substring assignments and wanted to explain to us how it works. It actually made our lives much easier! I understood how much of a help Mr.Arkin is. I could have had a much easier time with my assignments. As Mr.Arkin said "That's why they pay me the big bucks!" It was actually very interesting as to how the instructions to the computer can be so literal. We learned a few interesting new keywords and what they do.

Mr.Arkin later mentioned how we must be very careful with our spelling and grammar mistakes when we post things on the wikispaces discussion forum, on our websites and in our blog entries. Mr.Arkin especially mentioned my case where I wrote "teh" instead of "the" twice in one wikispaces entry. Sorry again! Until the end of the class, Mr.Arkin went through our substrings assignments, explaining each of them one by one showing model answers and why they are correct. He showed us new ways that we could do it and the counted loop would have came in handy if we had known it. We go up to substrings # 9 before the bell rang.

For homework Mr.Arkin asked us to modify assignment #9 so that it does the same thing for the constants instead of the vowels. It did look like it would take some thought but I was able to figure it after a while. I just need to put it into a program. Wish me luck!

No Studio 218

"I think that god wanted me to find him. Because there is no way that I was going to go that way."

- Our school Sears festival play
Aaron Kreifels (my part)

This relates to today. When I went shopping yesterday, I bought a Santa Claus CD with a whole bunch of music for the holidays. I brought that in today and it did not work on any of the computers because a lot of them either did not detect it or they did not have any speakers. So, there went my hope! But, finally Yasir's computer did both, detect it and had speakers. But, the people who did hear the music did not want to listen. So, I stopped. I am going to bring it in again next Studio 218 or the week after as it gets closer to Christmas and that way Mr.Arkin will also be here if I need help. Yay!

Mr.Arkin was not here today again. He sent us a message at around 2 in the morning and luckily, I checked my mail this morning so I was able to know in advance. He will be coming back hopefully on Monday.

Since, I had a lot of Studio 218 issues, I did not get a chance to work much on my assignments but luckily, I had already finished some extra assignments, so i am good to go. Mr.Arkin asked us to finish all of our assignments for Monday so that we are all ready to go. I am also progressing with my studying for the two tests which are the programming test next week and the substrings test on Monday or at least when Mr.Arkin gets back (hopefully Monday).

I am actually looking forward to the weekend to get some work done and I can't wait until the Christmas holidays because I am going on vacation but I am going to have a lot of work to do when I get back. Ahhhhh!!!!!!!!!!! I am guessing (not really) that I will be getting some more work over the holidays.

Another day

Warning: Short blog

As you may have noticed lately since Mr.Arkin is not here, we havn't had much to say since it is pretty much the same routine each day. Once again, today we worked on our substrings assignments. Since Mr.Arkin made it clear to us all that we have to have the first 15 substrings assignments done for tomorrow, many kids were working hard to get them done. Several students did not understand assignments so we all helped each other. I was glad to see how much teamwork was going on in the class. It was amazing! Most of the students were stuck at assignment 5 or 7. But, we all got through it. Yay! I understand now and I am ready for the test tomorrow. All I have to do is finish a few more assignment and study for the test tomorrow as my homework tonight. I do not have any other homework so I can focus on all of this. I am now going to STC to buy all my Christmas presents in a few minutes. Trust me, I will be coming home with a big bill! I have planned everything out so that we do not have to waste time looking for the stores and what I have to buy for who. I have a feeling though that I am not going to get a chance to go to all the places I need to because it is getting late. I am well prepared and ready to go!

Advance up ahead with substrings

Warning : Short blog!

There is not much to say because most of the class period, we were down stairs at the pep rally. It was actually, a day just like any this whole week because all we did this week including today was that we continued on our substrings assignments. I did get some more done this class with all my work.

I have found out today that we will be having a substrings quiz on Friday when does Mr.Arkin does get back. Sadly, he is not here tomorow either. He will be here Friday, ready to teach and get us going. I am hoping that all goes well with the test and that I am able to understand it. We havn't been taught anything specifically yet about substrings so I am hoping for it to all go well. I do understand it now but I am not done all of the assignments so I would like to finish some more so I understand the concept better. For homework, we have to continue or progress on our work with substrings. Wish me luck!
